Business on a Handshake

You could actually trust this guy enough to do business on a handshake. I had AC trouble and took my Sonata in. He tried charging it first. Said, "Take it for a spin and see if it runs ok. If it does, come back and pay me. If not, come back and we'll figure it out." Turns out it had a leak in the system, so he did the work... passing on his dealer parts discount to me. Finally somebody who doesn't charge exorbitant rates, and will not scam me out of house and home. I'd trust him enough to send my wife there with the car. (Too many mech's take advantage of women.)

Neil does great work at a reasonable price. When others wanted to sell me a new transmission, Neil cleaned a filter and fixed the problem. That was a year and a half ago. When I need someone I can trust, I go to Neil even though I live 30 minutes away.

Dishonest - Must Be A Corporate Cul
by Clint Steelrock on January 4th, 2009

Over a year ago I went here for tires - attracted by the buy 3 get the 4th free. The manager at the time was so rude - I nearly left half way through the job. My hopes had been that I would buy tires where I could go for an oil change & get free rotation.
A little over a year later I returned to the same location, hoping the manager had been changed. I believe he had. The new guy, Tim said he was now the manager (though another guy was pictured on the sign). Tim said they brought him in due to complaints & he proudly said they were now the number one store in Colorado. I will say he was polite & accomodating - but in the end that really doesn't matter.
This time I went in for oil change. alignment & tire rotation (as there was some bad wear on the tires). They completed the oil change, but guess what "they found something else wrong."
They found a loose tie rod when they attempted the alignment. To their credit the INNER TIE ROD was loose. Here's the bad part - they said the inner & outer Tie Rods were loose, & the Idler Arm was loose (odd since it was recently replaced & the vehicle had not been in an accident). To top it off they said a new bracket assembly was required (what? - I'm assuming they mean the bracket assembly that connects the idler arm to the frame - there is never a reason to change that unless bent from an accident.)
I know a little about cars & suspensions & could smell a rat. Their estimate to fix the problem: $703.00 + alignment
($57.19 - Inner Tie Rod
$99.00 - Remove & Replace Idler Arm
$135 - Remove & Replace Tie Rod End - Inner
$173.16 - Idler Arm
$144.55 - Bracket assembly ???
The balance must have been shop fees/additional labor - as that didn't print out on the estimate they showed me on their computer screen.)
I left & took the vehicle to a reliable local mechanic. The only part bad & needing replacement was the Inner Tie Rod. My MECH bought the part for $45 & changed it in less than 1/2 hour. I paid him $100 (including a little tip for honesty).
I took the vehicle to Alignment Masters for the alignment - they confirmed all the work & aligned the vehicle for less than the estimate they had provided (I can't recommend this place enough!!! 303-761-7219)
The bottom line is that Pep Boys Corporate Service must train their personel to be out & out crooks. Any competent MECH will know that an idler arm is good when a Tie Rod is bad & what is this bracket assembly crap? That's an extra $145 for nothing. Not to mention their labor rate (which the MGR said was $100 an hour) was at least double the time it would actually take.
I'm betting this is the kind of swindle any & all of the Pep Boys will attmept with unsuspecting customers.
Do yourself a favor & find a local HONEST mechanic that will not take you to the bank when you come in for an oil change!!!

Bad Customer Relations

I called this establishment when two dogs came out of their lot and barked at me, threatening me. The person I talked to claimed they were just pets; when I said I hadn't known that and other people walking by wouldn't know that, he hung up on me. Very bad customer relations. Regardless of their prices or quality of work, I will not take any car I have to them because of this.

I would give it 1 star, but the lady was nice at the front desk.
But, don't let the pleasant staff working the counter get one by you. I dropped by, obtained a quote on my tire size - and evaluated other stores. I went with this one as they seemed to be a tight shop.
Made my appt - confirmed that the tires were in stock. Dropped of my car - giving the keys and a typed up paper having my information and services to be rendered - including tire size.
They talked me into a fuel injection cleaning - car only had 40k miles.
Upon getting it back, car did not run properly and the wrong tires were put on.
Next day, the proper tires were put on, more money of course - and the car had to goto the dealer to get it back running properly.
Oh well...

While visiting Colorado my car broke down. I was in need of a new fuel pump so I could get on the road again. I was very fortunate to find such a honest reliable mechanic. I would highly recommend Autoworks of Estes to anyone.

DISHONEST

Wow, I had a similar experience as the previous reviewer. I asked them to check my two front struts and I left to walk around town...hours later I checked back and my boyfriend busted them trying to replace all 4 struts..but ALL of them were fine, none needed replacing!!! Then, a day or so later, terrible noises start coming from the car and we find out from another mechanic that the cv boot was ripped and one of the struts put back together wrong. We called Shavano to see if they could tow the car in and fix it...and they hung up on us! I'll be sending them a bill but they don't seem honorable enough to reimburse me. Bad service, dishonest, DO NOT GO THERE!
